Jean Chabot (1945-2003) was born in the Quebec town of Saint-Jean-Baptiste-de-Rouville. After filming several independant shorts, he began working as an assistant camera operator and later co-produced with Clovis Durant Un bicycle pour Pit (1968). He also published articles on film in Le Devoir and with the magazine 7 Jours. In 1970, he directed his first feature fiction film, Mon enfance à Montréal, for the series "Premières oeuvres" with the NFB. Later works include Une nuit en Amérique (1974), La fiction nucléaire (1978), Le futur intérieur (1982) and Voyage en Amérique avec un cheval emprunté (1987). These films are intuitive assemblages of images, voices and sounds of different origins. They speak of fragility and anxiety, and play with emotions. La nuit avec Hortense (1988) marks Chabot’s difficult return to fiction. Since then, he has produced Sans raison apparente (1995), Notre-Dame-des-chevaux (1997) and Max Sennet, roi du comique (2000).
