Ali El-Darsa
Ali El-Darsa is a Montréal-based artist who works in video, performance art and installation. El-Darsa immigrated to Canada in 2001, and holds a BFA in Intermedia/Cyberarts from Concordia University. His work is often a psychological portrait of sorts, externalizing internal spaces in an exploration of his cultural and sexual backgrounds. El-Darsa uses replication to raise issues of duality in the psyche. In his performance piece Ali & Ali, the artist creates a dialogue between multiple versions of himself, expressing a personal struggle to break out of behavioral patterns, while That Saturday of Every Weekend uses a similar technique to split the character's personality and thus breaking the regularity of every day life. Similarly, in his video Channel, although it becomes apparent that the main character is not alone, the camera technique used gives one the impression that the second person present is in fact another version of the first.
