Rita Moreira
São Paulo SP, Brasil, 1944
Writer, poet, editor and filmmaker. Her work pushes the boundaries that separate classical documentary from video art. Her heavily political pieces shed light on portions of society that are often made into outcasts at large urban centers. As such, they denounce the economic devices and the discourse that leads to social stratification. She is one of a generation that pioneered independent video in Brazil, and graduated in video-documentary from the New School for Social Research, in New York, in the early 1970s, a period in which she also served as a correspondent for the Opinião weekly. Ever since, she has been a militant with various social movements associated with feminism and gender. Her work has been shown and awarded at national and international festivals. She wrote for magazines such as Realidade and Nova, was a member of the editorial teams for vehicles such as Nova Cultural, Globo, and Time Life, and was responsible for the etymology section of the Larousse Encyclopedia. Rita Moreira has published poetry books, including Perscrutando o Papaia, Maria Morta em Mim, and A Hora do Maior Amor. She lives and works in São Paulo.
