Jean-Maxime Dufresne et Virginie Laganière

Canada

In addition to their individual practices, Jean-Maxime Dufresne and Virginie Laganière explore in their artistic collaboration the transformation of our built, natural and technological environments, as well as the social psyche. At the confluence of documentary, speculative and fictional approaches, the work of image and sound aims to question diverse realities to reveal their hidden narratives. Anthropological in nature, their artistic process is mainly guided by field research, conceptual thinking and investigations deployed during residencies abroad, and often includes collaborations with specialists from various backgrounds. Through the telescoping of various phenomena, their artistic production results in multifaceted installations which create a fertile dialogue in the arrangement of research material. To delve into its experiential and critical scope, a reflection on the staging of the photographic and videographic runs through all of their exhibitions, integrating sound art, sculptural elements and architectural devices.

Supported by the CALQ and the Canada Council for the Arts, their work has been the object of exhibitions, screenings and residencies in Canada and internationally. These include the Musée d’art de Joliette, the Galerie de l'UQAM, Occurrence contemporary art and essay space, VU centre for diffusion and production of photography, the Foreman Art Gallery, Optica contemporary art center, L’Oeil de Poisson, the Darling Foundry and the Antoine-Sirois Art Gallery, as well as Tokyo Arts and Space, the Inside-Out Art Museum (Beijing), ISELP (Brussels), La Becque ( La Tour-de-Peilz, Switzerland), Titanik Gallery (Turku, Finland) and the Helsinki International Artist Program. Their video work was recently presented at the International Festival of Films on Art (FIFA), the Rencontres Internationales Paris / Berlin, the Grantham Foundation as well as the Palazzo Grassi in Venice, and is part of the Hydro-Québec Collection. In 2025, they will take part in research and creation residencies at the Guido Molinari Foundation and the Ferme-Asile (Sion, Switzerland).
