Misha Horacek

Misha (Michelle) Horacek was born in Nova Scotia, Canada. Her family is from Prague, Czech Republic. Misha trained as a classical actress at The National Theatre School of Canada in Montréal, and DAMU National Theatre School in Prague.

Between 1994-2004 Misha worked extensively in the field of devised theatre in Halifax, Toronto, Prague, and New York. In 2006 Misha completed her MA in Visual Performance at Dartington College of Arts in Devon, England. Between 2006-2012 Misha was based in London and through her performance work in the UK and Europe she explored durational performance and site-specific performance as ways for focusing attention on the body in its relation to time and place.

Since 2008 Misha has been leading workshops in Body Mythology, the exploration of memories, images, ideas, gestures, personas, and stories that constitute the poetics of the body-psyche. As a choreographer Misha leads Planetary Dance, a dance for peace founded by Anna Halprin. To learn the Life/Art Process Misha studied at Tamalpa Institute in California in 2012-2013.

In 2015, Misha founded Human Desire Machine (HDM) with Christopher Spencer-Lowe (Halifax CAN). Together they create work that is a synthesis of movement, installation, sound, and film. HDM has performed live over the years, and they are currently working as a filmmaking team on the science fiction film EXTANT.

Misha’s current practice is focused on filmmaking. Misha is curious about the marriage of narrative and experimental structures that highlight the performing body. Misha is currently based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She also resides and works in London and Prague.
