First works brings together the first short films of recognized artists in the film industry. Through the programming of these nine films made between 1988 and 2019, Vidéographe celebrates the importance of audacity and experimentation in the journey of several unique voices in Quebec and Canadian cinema.

Programator

Alexandra Boilard-Lefebvre is an author and cultural worker who has been active in the Montreal arts scene for nearly twelve years. She has collaborated on the production and creation of numerous projects in theater, cinema, and podcasting. Nurtured by dialogue between genres and disciplines, research, and experimentation, her artistic practice is imbued with themes of memory, history, ordinary life, the complexity of reality, and the quest for self. She is currently the Executive Director of Vidéographe.

Through the programming of these nine films made between 1988 and 2019, Vidéographe celebrates the importance of audacity and experimentation in the journey of several unique voices in Quebec and Canadian cinema. From fiction to animation and documentary, these short films demonstrate deliberate risk-taking in terms of form, themes addressed, production methods and technologies used. The works highlighted were directed by Jayce Salloum, Karl Lemieux, Chloé Leriche, Marie-Josée Saint-Pierre, Anne Émond, Félix Dufour-Laperrière, Alisi Telengut, Alexa-Jeanne Dubé and Étienne Lacelle.

 

First works was presented on April 29, 2025 as part of the vidéo-club series, a Vidéographe initiative in collaboration with Cinéma Moderne. Every three months, Vidéographe invites cinephiles and curious to an evening of screening and discussion around a program drawn from works in the collection.
