A video/sound environment that draws on a personal archive of video walks through landscapes and cityscapes, recorded by the artist over a period of six years of travel in Tokyo, Paris, London, and parts of southern France, Ontario, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and the American southwest. Reader by the Window explores the common experience of receiving the familiar in unfamiliar places, of negotiated the strange and new by means of what is remembered, where memory is felt to be inexplicably inscribed in architectural spaces never seen before, where the boundaries of our identities blur into our surroundings and the strange becomes unrecognizably ours. Reader by the Window was originally conceived as an architectural work with video and sound, which is now in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada.

«Avec sa dernière oeuvre, Reader by the Window, Jan Peacock poursuit son travail sur la mémoire amorcé avec Wallace + Theresa, Sirensong et Whitewash. Elle se penche sur notre manière d'apprivoiser petit à petit un lieu qui nous étais jusque là inconnu et d'apaiser le sentiment d'absence et d'égarement que l'on éprouve au moment où l'on y est confronté pour la première fois. L'artiste nous révèle la force d'évocation d'un lieu qui nous est étranger, ainsi que notre capacité à le transformer en site familier par le recours de souvenirs, aux images de lieux connus ou visités auparavant accumulées dans notre mémoire. Elle nous confronte alors au fait que notre présence dans un endroit donné est toujours conditionnelle à cette rétrospection et qu'il est impossible de percevoir un espace en dehors de toute réminiscence. Le monde devant nous se met donc à exister au moment même où nous découvrons qu'il n'est pas ce à quoi il nous fait penser [...]»
