“It’s been a long time - undoubtedly since André Forcier or Jean-Claude Lauzon first started out - since we’ve seen a Quebec filmmaker with a bulldozer rhythm. These two films [Les frères Morel and Lila] depict those left behind, who have lost hope, abandoned souls and people with nothing to do, filmed in a manner only he knows how to do: tightly-framed shots jammed up against his camera, which appears to be part of his hands and eyes, looking closely indoors and out... For Les frères Morel, Daniel and I were wondering what we were going to shoot the next day. We put ourselves in the role of brothers who robbed corner stores on a motorcycle. Every summer I took off with my pal Daniel for at least 10 days on a motorbike. I won the camera on the Course destination monde television program and we broke it during the trip. We spent an hour a day improvising and shooting the film”.
