Pierre Gauvin Reluctant Monk
An intimate, filmic portrait of Pierre Gauvin, a Montreal photographer born in 1959, who has been working in the visual art milieu here for over wenty years. The film looks directly at the artist's creative world, observing a boyish, solitary man who has quietly grown to assume his singularity and difference. Out of a quiet, rather Spartan existence emerges a body of black-and-white photography that is dramatic, lush, varied and sometimes strange. Like many artists of his generation, Gauvin overcomes hardships and labours in obscurity. His perseverence arises from his steadfast decision to create.
