This Is Not Beirut (There Was and There Was Not)
This video is, at the most fundamental level, a personal project: to examine the use of images/representations of Lebanon and Beirut both in the West and in Lebanon itself; to record the interactions and experiences whilst filming in Lebanon, focusing attention on the representational process as both a Lebanese and a Westernized, foreign-born mediator with cultural connections and baggage from both, as well as living between the disparities and disjunctions arising in both; to situate the work between genres, looking from the inside out at each, and engaging critically at the assumptions imposed and thus broken in this site of complexity where one defines and articulates one's identity.
