Filming the other in oneself: fascination and a cinephile gesture in the work of Mathieu Amalric, Maïwenn and Xavier Dolan

What are the formal and narrative processes through which self-shooting becomes a declaration of love for the cinema? This session examines the practice of self-shooting as a cinephile gesture through the works of several contemporary filmmakers (Amalric, Maïwenn, Dolan) and considers the relationship to the image that this practice engenders for the filmmaker and the viewer, looking at mise en abyme, vulnerability and self-criticism.

Filmed on Friday, May 4, 2018 at the Université de Montréal.
