La Blanchisseuse

La Blanchisseuse is an experimental video exploring the existing tendency of women to take greater responsibility for domestic work, and the signifiance of this tendency in terms of women's capacity to develop in other areas. The images of a woman ironing pay homage to paintings of laundresses by artists such as Edgar Degas, Honoré Daumier, Edouard Manet, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Edward Stott and others. Texts borrowed from Denise Levertov, Adrienne Rich and Virginia Woolf allude to the strong "pull" for a woman to provide nurturing care to others and to the sense of betrayal and rejection that can be the reward for providing such care.
