marshalore's You Must Remember This is an autobiographical narrative on the pressure to conform to a feminine stereotype of beauty. It deals with a series of small, intimate dramas where she sings old songs of the 1930s and 40s. If the text seem banal, the melodies derived from the title song combine with remarkable camerawork to create a wonderfully seductive atmosphere.

This video is in essence an investigation of identity : mimicry, camouflage, fantasy, disguise, caricature. One by one, three stories played out by the artist introduce us to three characters. The stories are intercut with short black and white sequences in which marshalore gives a sultry rendition of the song that gives the video its title. Emblematic of marshalore’s video and performance art, this work is singular, playful, ironic and bears the stamp of a profound talent for transgression.
