Choices : from Eastern Europe, an Artist Speaks Out

Josef Robakowski is one of Poland's leading avant-garde filmmakers. In this work, he describes the struggle to gain the right to pursue independent art in Eastern Europe. The term "independent art" takes on a singular connotation in countries where culture is controlled by the state, and where film and video are tools of politicians. Through several forms of expression, Robakowski analyses the real-life situation of the artist in a regime which has eliminated public life and silenced its political critics.
